GLOBAL STRATEGIES

Most managers are nearsighted. Even though today's
competitive landscape often stretches to a global horizon,
they see best what they know best: the customers
geographically closest to home.
Kenichi Ohmae

A powerful force drives the world toward a
converging commonality, and that force is
technology......The result is a new commercial
reality---the emergence of global markets for
standardized consumer products on a previously
unimagined scale of magnitude
Theodore Levitt

My ventures are not in one bottom trusted, nor
to one place

William Shakespeare

The basic philosophy, spirit and drive of an
organization have far more to do so with its
relative achievements than do technological
or economic resources, organizational structure,
innovation and timing.
Thomas Watson

Structure follows strategy

ENHANCING THE CHANCES OF A SUCCESSFUL PARTNERSHIP

1. Both sides must gain now and in the future. Protect and enhance the assets and skills being contributed. Don't let your partner take over even if costs can be saved. Make sure your partner continues to benefit even when it means that you have to give up something.

2. Deal with the differences in organizations - people, cultures, structures, and systems- and in country cultures. If there is a separate organization involved, give it space to develop its own culture. If not, invest in working together as a team.

3. Build in some flexibility and capacity for change. Recognize that circumstances and markets can fluctuate. Be clear about expectations and contributions.

4. Have a balanced management team to avoid having one partner dominate the organization.
